The Cistercian Monastery of Santa Maria of Meira, founded in the XII century by the Alfonso VII, is located nearby the source of Galician's main river, río Miño. Since the XVI Century, the building was used as Faculty of Philosophy. The Monastery owned land all around Lugo and Zamora. The Monastery was used as a Military Hospital and an ammunition dump during Napoleon's invasion. The temple is one of the longest of its time with 67 meters and remains virtually unchanged. The Monastery houses the sarcophagus of Ms. Maria de Bolaño (1543) and the gravestone of Fray Atanasio Cepeda (1659). The ironwork on the main door is remarkably detailed and dates from the XIII century. There are extraordinary paintings from the XVII century in the ambulatory and at the chapel of the reliquary, featuring among others, Saint Alano, protector of knowledge and Saint Robert, founder of the Cistercian order. There are remains of the Low Processional Cloister, the Agnus Dei on the inner door, the Hospice, the Porter and the Faculty with remains of the Knights' Cloister. The neighbourhood of the 'Nursery' and the "Fountain of the Monks" are still in place. The Monastery is a 'National Monument' since 1931.

Beschreibung in Französisch
