Casbas

The Monastery of Casbas, founded in 1174, is considered to be the most important architectural vestige of Cistercian women in Aragon.

The singularity of the Monastery of Casbas lies in the facts that all its units: church, cloister, refectory, chapter house, library ..., remain intact fulfilling their function under the Cistercian guidelines and, above all, it is a female Monastery, which makes it a unique rarity in Spain.

This monastic complex represents one of the best architectural witnesses of our heritage to understand the monastic life and closure of women from the twelfth century to our days. 

It was classified as a Monumento Nacional in 1979, now known as Bien de Interés Cultural from 2004, in accordance with Law 3/1999 on Patrimonio Cultural Aragonés.

All the dependencies are in different states of conservation. As a Monumento Nacional, it has had different rehabilitation interventions, first by the Government of Aragon and currently by its owner, the Progea Foundation.

The Monastery was continuously inhabited since its foundation until 2004. The religious community of the so called Madres Bernardas kept it open for religious and cultural uses. The Progea Foundation acquired it in July 2007 with the idea of developing an important and necessary recovery project.

The Monastery of Casbas is settled in an area of 3 hectares with 10.000 square meters built area.
