Ferté (La)

First daughter-house of Citeaux, itnwas founded in 1113 in the Grosne valley. Like many abbeys it suffered immensely during the major periods in French history: the hundred years' war, the religious wars and the Revolution. Owned by the same family since the Revolution, today only the magnificent abbey palace with its interiors remains: vast staircase, rooms with sculpted panelling, tapestries, paintings and XVIIth century furniture.
