Ramée (La)

Participating in spiritual impulse of monastic orders throughout our regions during the 12th and 13th centuries, the Cistercian order established a nunnery, in around 1216, in the valley of the Grande Gette at Jauchelette, upstream from Jodoigne. It took the name of La Ramée (Rameia). This Cistercian presence was to last for five and a half centuries, and marked the region not only spiritually but agriculturally and architecturally as well. In spite of the suppression of monastic orders in 1796 by the French administration, this presence can still be felt today thanks to the buildings that history has preserved. They mostly served an agricultural purpose, and date back to the 18th century, a period when the abbey was reconstructed. In spite of the disappearance of the former monastic buildings, La Ramée remains one of the most significant vestiges of the Cistercian presence in Brabant: a small nunnery combined with a major agricultural concern, located in a judiciously chosen site. With its traditional, harmonious and monumental Brabant style, this 18th century architectural complex is unquestionably a local heritage landmark in the Jodoigne area...

Participant au mouvement d'essaimage des ordres monastiques aux XXIIème et XIIIème siècles dans nos régions, l'ordre de Cîteaux implanta, vers 1216, une abbaye de moniales dans la vallée de la Grande Gette à Jauchelette, en amont de Jodoigne. Elle portera le nom de la Ramée (Rameia). Cette présence cistercienne allait perdurer pendant cinq siècles et demi, et marquer la région tant au plan spirituel qu'au plan agricole et architectural. Malgré la suppression des ordres monastiques en 1796 par l'administration française, cette présence est encore sensible aujourd'hui grâce aux bâtiments que l'histoire a conservés. Pour la plupart, ils avaient une fonction agricole et appartiennent au XVIIIe siècle, période de reconstruction de l'abbaye. Malgré la disparition des bâtiments monastiques anciens, l'abbaye de La Ramée reste un des témoins les plus significatifs de la présence cistercienne en Brabant-Wallon : petite abbaye de moniales doublée d'une importante exploitation agricole, implanté dans un site judicieusement choisi. Par son style traditionnel brabançon, homogène et monumental, cet ensemble architectural du XVIIIe siècle constitue incontestablement un haut lieu du patrimoine jodoignois...
