Bénisson-Dieu (La)

Cistercian Royal Abbey founded in 1138, the day of Michaelmas, 30th daughter of Clairvaux, by Alberic disciple of St. Bernard. The abbey church was completed in the late 12th century. Remodeled in the late 15th century, Pierre de la Fin, last abbot and regular first abbot commendatory it added a fortified tower. In the early 16th century, the abbey of men, dilapidated, becoming an abbey of women and Philibert Nérestang, Marquis, father of the first abbess and comrade of King Hentai IV carries out major refurbishment. In the mid 16th century, Francesca Nérestang built the baroque chapel built in Italy. During the Revolution, the abbey was abandoned and became a national asset, then it is sold as a career. The abbey is under restoration, the parish church of the town of La Bénisson Christi in 1847.
