Aulne

Aulne - Abbaye The abbey is nestled in a steep valley on the right bank of the river Sambre, in a place rightly called ?Valley of Peace?. According to legend, it was founded in the 7th century by Saint Landelin (a repented bandit) who named it ?Aulne Abbey? due to its wealth of alder trees. Benedictine to start with, it became Cistercian in the 12th century. Establishing itself over the years as a powerful land trustee, it was nicknamed ?Aulne the Rich?, until 14 May 1794! Today, the ruins are a haven of peace where life is good... Discover the history of the Abbey thanks to didactic signs and immerse yourself in the life of Cistercian monks reflected in the commentaries of the audio tour which is handed out at the entrance. Lounge in the landscaped garden restored at the end of 2008. To end your relaxing day, visit the Val de Sambre Brasserie annex to the Abbey or try out the dance hall or the mini-golf.
