Orval

Orval Abbey was founded in 1070 and became Cistercian (Order of Cistercians) in 1132. Destroyed during the French revolution, it re-emerged from its ruins as of 1962. The architect Vaes designed the abbey in accordance with the traditional Cistercian plan, drawing inspiration on the Romanesque and Art Deco styles. Visit the ruins of the old Cistercian Abbey and you will discover a site steeped in authenticity in the midst of a valley where Matilda Fountain gushes forth. A projection on the history of the monastery and communal life (about 20 minutes), as well as an interpretive tour will help you understand the mysteries of the place. Depending on your expectations, you will be delighted by the art collections on show in the 18th century cellars, the traditional pharmacy and its garden of medicinal plants. If you want to refresh your mind through personal and communal prayer, and withdraw for a spiritual rest in silence, the monks at Orval would be delighted to welcome you to their world of peace, beauty and silence.
