Description en anglais
The Abbey of Santa María de Oseira was founded in 1137 and joined the Cistercian Reformation in 1141 bound to Clairvaux. Originally built as a small monastery formed by a transitional romanesque church and a single cloister (the regular cloister, known today as
cloister of medallions) it was destroyed by a great fire in 1552. The restoration started in 1553. During the first decades of the 17th century a second cloister was added (
cloister of pinacles) and a third one (
cloister of knights) on the 18th century. In 1835 all the monks were expelled as a result of the law of
desamortización and the building remained abandoned for nearly a century, with the subsequent plundering which led to collapse and ruin. The Abbey was refounded in 1929 by french and spanish cistercian monks and became
spanish national heritage in 1965. The works for the restoration started in 1966 and the building is happily rebuilt today thanks to the efforts of the brothers who had lived there ever since. The 14 monks who inhabit the Abbey of Santa María la Real de Oseira carry on with the tradition of their predecessors making a delicious liquor,
Eucaliptine, made of 3 different varietys of eucaliptus leaves that they grow on their lands, as well as pastries and cookies.
