Bernardins (Collège des)

Bernardins (Collège des) - Abbaye The Abbey of Clairvaux was the instigator behind the original Collège des Bernardins foundation. Created in 1245 it was permanently settled in the Clos du Chardonnet, while the main and still-standing building was constructed. In 1320, Clairvaux sold the Collège des Bernardins to the General Cistercian Chapter. In 1338, Pope Benedict XII, one of the Collège's alumni, eventually launched the construction of an imposing, never-completed church. The sacristy is all that remains of this structure. During the French Revolution, the Collège des Bernardins was placed in the public domain. The church was sold and a large part of it was demolished. The main building remained the property of the city of Paris and served different functions until 1845. It was then converted into a fire house. It became the property of the Diocese of Paris in 2001. Recently renovated, this exceptional building has been open to all since September 2008. It is now a space where the hopes and issues of our times meet Christian wisdom. All are invited to dialogue interact through reflection or research, learning or art. Numerous activities are offered: contemporary art exhibitions, music, activities for young children; meetings and discussions through colloquiums and conferences; theological and biblical instruction. A bookstore, a library, a garden and a café are now part of this historical site and lively space open to all.
