Pelplin
Pelplin its the cultural heritage of the Cistercians who have lived here for six centuries, with the Museum of the Diocese which houses the Gutenberg Bible, the Mountain of John Paul II, and other numerous interesting places. Former Cistercian Abbey - main showplace of the Pelplin, preserved in great condition, helps to learn about the heritage of the Cistercian Order. Pelplin was established in 1274, when Mestwin (Msciwój II), the prince of Pomerania, gave this village to the Cistercians. The Assembly of the Order came here on 27 October 1276 from Pogódki, where the members of the order were led by Prince Sambor II from Doberan (Mecklemburg, Germany). Pelplin was established according to the Cistercian standards on the construction of monasteries it was situated in the valley, by the Wierzyca river. Pelplin, the capital of the Diocese of Pelplin, is an important religious and cultural centre, open to tourists and pilgrims. It is characterised by a specific, slightly nostalgic atmosphere, which encourages visitors to experience silence and meditation. [ Back ]
