Vausse

Vausse - Abbaye Vausse Priory is located in Saint-Jean's forest (Châtel-Gérard, Yonne). It was founded at the beginning of the XIIIth century by Anséric de Montréal and was under the authority of the Abbey of Val des Choues. Protected by the lords of Montreal then by the Dukes of Burgundy, it enjoyed great prosperity up until the XVth century. From the XVIth century, with financial difficulties and the decrease in the number of monks it went into decline. In the XVIIth century, the priors, previously elected by the monks, were appointed by sovereign powers. These commendatory priors, of whom the majority lived as prodigal lords far from Vausse, were unable to counter the slackening in lifestyle which affected the monks themselves. In the XVIIIth century, a fire devastated a wing of the priory. In 1763, the last monk left Vausse for the Abbey of Val des Choues. During the Revolution, the Priory was sold and transformed into a pottery. In 1835, Ernest Petit was born at the Priory. He became a Burgundy historian and made the priory his office. The descendents of Ernest Petit occupy part of the priory and the adjacent farm and perpetuate.
