Sylvanès

Sylvanès - Abbaye Founded by a repentant brigand, Pons de l'Héras, the recluse community of Sylvanès joined the Ordre de Citeaux in 1136. After 150 years of influence, the monastery fell into decadence, and was abandoned during the revolution. A registered landmark since 1854, the abbey was bought by the town of Sylvanès in 1970, with help from the Conseil Général de l'Aveyron. The site began its true renaissance in 1975, thanks to the Association des Amis de l'Abbaye de Sylvanès, under the direction of Father André Gouzes and Michel Wolkowitsky. The abbey is now great tourist sites in Midi-Pyrenees. Located at the heart of the Parc Régional Naturel des Grands Causses, Sylvanès Abbey is now an international meeting place for cultural, spiritual and musical encounters, offering in an exceptional setting of architecture and wilderness: Training course of choral and sacred music, colloquiums on diverse religious issues, cinema encounters, programme of arts classes, shows for young people, cultural holiday-tours in France and abroad. Nowadays, you can discover and understand the nice proportions of the abbey church, visit the Chapter house and the ancient scriptorium, go for a walk in the cloister. The abbey church is a Cistercian masterpiece of art and acoustics, and hosts the internationally famous Festival of Sacred Musics of the World, each summer.
