Preuilly

Preuilly - Abbaye Preuilly, fifth daughter of Citeaux, was founded in 1118 thanks to Thibaut the Great, Count of Champagne, and with the help of numerous other donations. The monastery prospered and was subsequently able to found three more monasteries : Vauluisant, Barbeau and La Colombe. Renowned for their exemplary charity, the monks from Preuilly were also ardently devoted to ?Our Lady? who became known as ?Our Lady of the Oak?. ?Our Lady of the Oak? is still honoured in our day through an annual pilgrimage taking place at the end of September. Nevertheless, as the centuries passed, diverse difficulties led to a decline, and finally the French Revolution (1789), here as elsewhere, resulted in the dispersion of the last ten monks in 1791. Declared ?National Property?, the monastery was divided into five lots and sold at public auction. From 1829 onwards, Dr Husson began gradually buying back the lots and stopped demolitions. Thus reunified in 1866, the property has since been officially classified as a historical monument. The property still belongs to Dr. Husson's descendants, who remain committed to preserving the site, as well as to maintaining the farm operations and developing the recently established stud farm.
