Réconfort (Le)

Réconfort (Le) - Abbaye The monks' abbey, founded in 1235 by Mahaut de Courtenay, countess of Nevers, received its foundation letters in 1244; they were confirmed by Pope Innocent IV who came and consecrated the church in 1246. The Chapter house and the vestry are the only relics from the XIIIth century. The Chapter house, with two naves, is covered by six ribbed vaults resting on consoles and two central columns; the old barrel vaulted vestry was adjoined to the church and the cloister. They were in the south part of the ground floor of the main building of the old abbey. This abbey was renovated and become a convalescent home on 1st December 1987. In 2007, a building was constructed to accommodate 80 patients for aftercare and rehabilitation.
