The Monastery of Oia is located in a privileged natural and historical surrounding. The monastic life started in Oia in the year 1.137.
In 1185 Oia was annexed to the reformed rule of San Bernardo.
The monks of Oia turned an unproductive region into a zone of renewed wealth, introducing a big change in agriculture. Their contributions remain today, for example the famous spectacle “Rapa das bestas” about the raise of wild horses together with the great wines that we can taste in the region of Miñor Valley.
They were know like "The Gunners Monks" since the monastery was constituting an important defensive bastion opposite to the constant plundering and marine invasions.
The Spanish Monarchy gave them the title of Royal and Imperial Monastery of Oia in 1.625 a.C.
The proximity of the Monastery to the ocean is a distinguishing sign of Oia, no other Monastery of the Císter Order is situated so close to the ocean.
The project consists in reconverting this architectonic jewel in a 4 Stars Monument-Hotel with Spa.
